Evgeniya Mozheyko

First of all, let me introduce myself. My name is Evgeniya Mozheyko and I am a student of the 10th grade.Last year was rather unusual for me. I have spent that year in the US, living in a host family and attending Loudoun Valley High School in Virginia. I was very lucky to win the contest held by the American Councils which prize was to spend a year in the United States in the host family. So I will tell you briefly about my American experience. Before departing to America I did not expect or anticipate anything that's why probably I hadn't experienced any disappointment, regarding my expectations. I was sent to Northern Virginia, a town, called Purcellville, to be precise. You could hardly call Purcellville a town, because it practically consisted of just 4 things: a bank, McDonald's, a gas station and the high school. As you might have already heard, most of rural Americans live in their own houses. So did my host family. I must say that if my host family hadn't been so awesome, my American experience wouldn't have been so positive and memorable. The family made me feel at home in their house what was vitally important to me. When I returned back to Russia I have been asked one question many times. Most people wanted to know how it was to study in the American high school and what the attitude of the local kids toward me was. To be honest, I was sort of lost during my first school month. Just try to imagine you do not speak English well enough first of all and second of all, American educational system differs from ours very much. But I have to admit that American kids were very hospitable to me and almost everyone offered me help when needed. When you get used to studying in the US, you will see that American high schools are neither harder nor easier than Russian schools, they are just different. Speaking about American people, I can say that Americans are more open than Russians, but are less natural. They are very polite and are never tired of saying "Thank you" or "Please" which is obviously good. And, certainly, Americans smile a lot! Everyone has noticed that I have started to smile much more after having spent a year in the States what I regard to be good. Another problem that matters to all Russian students who are leaving to America is American cuisine. Well… here comes some disappointment. American cuisine mostly consists of hamburgers, french fries, coke and steak&cheese. So it's really easy to gain some extra weight while staying in America. So go in for sports while studying in the US. Overall, my American experience was very-very positive and I have enjoyed the year spent there greatly! It was mentally tough for me to be far away from my parents for such a long time, but I am very glad I managed to get through all those difficult phsychological moments for me. That year had given me a lot in my personal development which is very valuable. In conclusion I want to say that it is totally up to you to decide whether you love America or not, but if you get a chance to visit this country I recommend you take the most out of this opportunity!

The school year 2005-2006 i spent in America, where i was sent as one of the winners of the FLEX contest. That year was certainly one of the most remarkable years in my life. I lived in Texas, in the farmer's family, i had two sisters and a brother. That year i've learned a lot, there're so many things to get used to. Living in a farmer's family meant learning how to take care of the animals. I even had my own pig, which i had to take care of, exercise him and show him on the stock shows. Life in America was a great experience for me, living in such an interesting country, learning its traditions and its way of life-all that was just unforgettable. School life, Friday night football games, so many exciting school activities and just American teenagers themselves-that was one of the most pleasant sides of my life there. Celebrating Christmas, going skiing to Colorado on Christmas break, living in my host family just as if i was my host parents' real child, feeling like a real american teenager-that is why such an experience, a year spent in another country, is a great chance for everyone. It gave me a lot, it changed me a lot. And i think that such a risk, as going to America for a year is worth being, mainly because it teaches you a lot and makes you feel comfortable in any situation, makes you more flexible and makes you belive i yourself.
